Non posso però accettare i toni con cui il Presidente del Consiglio ha, in questi giorni, letteralmente ingiuriato la scuola pubblica italiana e quanti operano con professionalità e impegno all'interno di essa.
Se egli, che parlava a un convegno di cattolici [il Congresso dei Cristiano-Riformisti, N.d.R.], ha creduto in tal modo di fare cosa gradita a questi suoi potenziali elettori, ritengo che stavolta non abbia raggiunto lo scopo. Infatti, noi cattolici non contrapponiamo la scuola cattolica a quella pubblica laica, ma riteniamo col buon senso che ci siano positività nell'una e nell'altra e che possano esservi taluni disservizi nell'una e nell'altra; ma riteniamo ancor di più - con la Costituzione - che vi debba essere libertà per l'una e per l'altra.
Io, e con me moltissimi cattolici, ritengo che chi sceglie la scuola cattolica lo faccia per una propria libera scelta e non per sottrarre i propri figli al cosiddetto "lavaggio del cervello" che verrebbe operato dai docenti della scuola pubblica nei confronti degli alunni, per renderli "contrapposti agli insegnamenti delle famiglie", come ha dichiarato il Presidente del Consiglio. Questi, che si vanta di avere frequentato le scuole dei Salesiani, non ha esperienza diretta delle scuole pubbliche come ce l'ho io e moltissimi altri cattolici che hanno scelto di frequentarle, dove ci siamo trovati molto bene, malgrado la scarsità di risorse.

L'istruzione inferiore, impartita per almeno otto anni, è obbligatoria e gratuita. I capaci e meritevoli, anche se privi di mezzi, hanno diritto di raggiungere i gradi più alti degli studi. La Repubblica rende effettivo questo diritto con borse di studio, assegni alle famiglie ed altre provvidenze, che devono essere attribuite per concorso», N.d.R.]. Egli invece l'ha giudicata come "luogo di corruzione dei giovani" e di "circonvenzione di minori".
Nessun cattolico, fedele laico o membro della gerarchia ecclesiastica si era mai espresso in tali termini; nessun conservatore di formazione cattolica, per quanto critico della scuola pubblica, si era mai spinto a tanto.
E nemmeno la FIDAE - la Federazione delle scuole cattoliche che conosco da decenni per aver collaborato con essa sull'integrazione degli alunni con disabilità - credo sia grata al Presidente del Consiglio per queste sue affermazioni gratuite e ingiuriose; anzi, credo che ne sia stata sgradevolmente colpita e mi auguro che faccia sentire la propria voce di dissenso e di dissociazione da questo giudizio denigratorio.
Il Presidente del Consiglio, che ha il merito di avere firmato la Legge 67/06 che condanna qualunque forma di discriminazione nei confronti delle persone con disabilità, ha con quel suo giudizio lesivo della verità operato un'inqualificabile discriminazione ai danni della scuola pubblica, cui dovrebbe riparare assicurando ad essa maggiori risorse finanziarie, per elevarne sempre di più la qualità.
