Chi non sa che cosa sia! Geografia sì, geografia no, geografia così così! Se ne sta discutendo in questi giorni e non so quanto a proposito! Resta o non resta nei programmi di studio? Ma! Facciamo un po’ d’ordine. Ci sono due questioni di fondo da cui occorre partire. La prima riguarda la geografia come "materia" di studio scolastico, perché di questo si sta oggi discutendo, non la geografia in quanto "disciplina", che attiene a settori di ricerca avanzati che con la scuola poco o nulla hanno a che fare. La seconda questione riguarda le strategie e le modalità con cui un soggetto in età evolutiva cresce, si sviluppa e apprende, interiorizza le dinamiche spaziali, interagisce con esse e le utilizza ai fini della sua personale "sopravvivenza" nell’ambiente vicino/lontano in cui si trova ad operare e a vivere.
Per quanto riguarda la prima questione, va ricordato che una "disciplina" è, in quanto tale, sempre aperta e mai conclusa. Ciò che ieri era o sembrava certo, oggi è messo in seria discussione. In materia geografica, o meglio in materia dei corpi celesti, Tolomeo ha occupato per secoli una scena che Copernico ha poi letteralmente capovolto. Com’è noto, il sole non sorge e non tramonta, anche se ancora oggi i due verbi, pur se scientificamente scorretti, fanno parte del linguaggio comune. Una "materia", invece, proprio perché destinata all’insegnamento/apprendimento scolastico è qualcosa di definito, di concluso, in quanto a chi cresce e apprende occorre dare elementi semplici ma precisi per quanto concerne l’acquisizione di quei dati su cui il soggetto è tenuto a costruire le sue prime certezze. Di qui discendono i programmi con le indicazioni dei contenuti da trattare e i libri di testo che vi si conformano. Va, comunque, ricordato che oggi l’insegnare per programmi è in crisi, a fronte dell’insegnare per competenze, ma questo è un altro discorso. Torniamo alla "materia" che, quindi, costituisce una necessaria riduzione della disciplina, certamente non un suo impoverimento. Ciò comporta che chi insegna è pur sempre tenuto a sollecitare in chi apprende il gusto e la pratica della ricerca e della scoperta, soprattutto in situazioni laboratoriali e di gruppo: il che rinvia alle strategie dell’insegnare/apprendere e, nella fattispecie, alla didattica della geografia.
Ma la geografia, in quanto materia, deve fare i conti con il soggetto che apprende. Di qui, il passaggio alla seconda questione, più ampia della precedente perché rinvia alle strategie e ai modi del conoscere e dell’apprendere, che sono assolutamente diversi a seconda delle diverse fasce d’età.
Prendiamo in considerazione ciò che accade in un soggetto che cresce e apprende nella prima fase dell’età evolutiva, in cui di fatto si replica nel giro di un tempo relativamente breve ciò che si è verificato nella nostra specie umana in tempi molto lunghi. Il nostro lontano progenitore ha cominciato a "costruire" la sua intelligenza al fine di organizzare ed asservire la realtà circostante in funzione di suoi primari bisogni di sopravvivenza e di riproduzione. E le prime coordinate del Sé attivo e intelligente sono state quelle che riguardano le due dimensioni dello spazio e del tempo. Per quest’uomo non esiste la geografia, non esiste la storia! Esistono, invece, lo "spazio" che lo circonda e che deve riconoscere, organizzare, piegare alle sue necessità, ed il "tempo" con cui memorizzare dati e informazioni del "prima" per prevedere e progettare il "dopo".
Nel soggetto che nasce, cresce e apprende nella nostra epoca, la costruzione del Sé e le operazioni intellettive ripercorrono la strada di allora, che non dura secoli ma solo i primi anni di vita. Anche le sollecitazioni esterne sono assolutamente diverse: lo spazio naturale è in larga misura sostituito da quello artificializzato, e il tempo è scandito da orologi e calendari. Ma le modalità di costruzione del "prima" e del "dopo", del "qui" e del "là" non sono diverse da quelle che la nostra specie ha faticosamente imparato a coordinare e organizzare. Il bambino che cresce costruisce la sua identità personale proprio operando sull’incrocio di queste due coordinate, l’asse verticale del tempo (ieri, oggi, domani…) e l’asse orizzontale dello spazio (qui, là, avanti, dietro…). Sull’asse verticale memorizza, archivia ed elabora dati, costruisce concetti, principi, procedure e strategie per agire. Sull’asse orizzontale costruisce concreti rapporti con gli oggetti che lo circondano e con gli altri del gruppo di cui deve condividere tecniche di sopravvivenza e norme e valori di convivenza.
Il susseguirsi degli eventi implementa costantemente l’incrocio dei due assi: l’ hic et nunc e l’illic et tunc si succedono in un divenire continuo ed irripetibile fino a costituire le condizioni stesse del Sè. I fatti sono condizionati e prodotti dallo e nello spazio/tempo. Pertanto, se spazio e tempo sono concettualmente distinguibili – un cronometro non è una carta geografica – operativamente non sono separabili. Ne consegue che la geografia e la storia si condizionano a vicenda; l’una non può fare a meno dell'altra. Cancellare lo studio della geografia significa rendere monco, se non impossibile, anche lo studio della storia.
Stando a queste considerazioni, discende che la distinzione dello spazio e del tempo e della loro organizzazione concettuale in geografia e storia, come materie o come discipline diverse, se non addirittura separate, non ha assolutamente senso, perché chi cresce e apprende le percorre e le costruisce contestualmente né potrebbe avvenire diversamente.
Tornando all’assunto iniziale, se la geografia possa essere penalizzata, in funzione del fatto che si risparmierebbero ore, cattedre e, soprattutto, soldi, va detto con forza che si tratta di un assunto che non sta assolutamente in piedi! La giustificazione didattica consisterebbe nel fatto che oggi, con un mondo globalizzato, con le comunicazioni fisiche e simboliche sempre più intensificate (i trasporti, i media, il web), lo spazio non è più quello di una volta! Si spende meno tempo, e meno soldi, per arrivare da Piazza Venezia a Parigi che per raggiungere un quartiere periferico! Mappe e carte geografiche sono ormai in tutte le edicole e così via! Pertanto, la geografia si apprenderebbe pressoché spontaneamente nel contesto sociale.
Ma non è così! Il problema non è quello della disponibilità "oggettiva" di ciò che un tempo era il lontano, ma della indisponibilità "soggettiva" dei nuovi nati a saper costruire correttamente da soli e senza input corretti le coordinate spaziali. Queste, di fatto, in chi cresce e apprende non si sviluppano e non si implementano se non intrecciandosi con quelle temporali. Nel nuovo nato che cresce e apprende lo spazio non può fare a meno del tempo! E l’educatore avveduto, soprattutto nella scuola dell’infanzia e nella primaria, sa come agire su ambedue le coordinate.
Ne consegue che nella scuola organizzata per materie la geografia non può fare a meno della storia! Chi propone di ridurre o di cancellare la geografia nella scuola dimostra di non conoscere questa circostanza. E’ come se si proponesse di insegnare a leggere e non a scrivere! E non è un caso che ciò è effettivamente avvenuto, quando una volta alle fanciulle delle famiglie bene i precettori insegnavano solo a leggere, ovviamente i libri sacri e quelli di galateo e di buona creanza! Ma non si insegnava a scrivere, perché la scrittura avrebbe sollecitato il pensiero produttivo, e questo è sempre pericoloso, soprattutto quando chi è deputato a pensare è solo e sempre il maschio!
Insomma, oggi, in una scuola orientata a sviluppare competenze, è già difficile parlare di materie distinte l’una dall’altra da ore, cattedre e campanelle, in forza del fatto che solo proposte e progettazioni pluridisciplinari sono in grado di rispondere alle nuove esigenze di un processo di istruzione. E pensare addirittura di cancellare la geografia è da irresponsabili ignoranti!

Caro Maurizio, in una riunione di due mesi fa riguardante il quadro orario del liceo scientifico, mi sono espresso affermando che la geografia dovrebbe essere appresa insieme alla storia e non come materia a parte. Questa mia convinzione era nata anche perché avevo avuto occasione di ascoltare persone diplomate di una certa età che, pur avendo nozioni storiche, dal punto di vista spaziale confondevano gli Stati Uniti con la Gran Bretagna.
Devo fare però una premessa. Nel tuo scritto tu inserisci nella geografia anche la parte astronomica e inserisci i nomi di Tolomeo e di Copernico. Ai tempi della riforma Moratti mi trovavo ad Amsterdam insieme al presidente della Società Astronomica Italiana, della quale sono socio onorario. Mentre aspettavamo il treno alla stazione, abbiamo discusso sull’opportunità d’inserire la parte astronomica nella fisica, togliendola dalla geografia e dalle scienze naturali. Ci siamo trovati d’accordo su questa opportunità perché l’astronomia si presta particolarmente, e in modo facile, a far applicare le leggi fisiche che si cominciano a studiare dalla scuola secondaria di primo grado in poi. Nella geografia e nelle scienze la parte astronomica si affronta soltanto in maniera descrittiva, mentre in fisica il tutto si arricchisce con gli aspetti quantitativi, per cui i fenomeni astronomici più noti ai ragazzi possono essere visti in maniera più completa e non solo compresi superficialmente. Tanto per fare un esempio, in geografia o scienze posso far comprendere in maniera intuitiva ai ragazzi che all’afelio la Terra si muove intono al Sole con una velocità minore che al perielio, mentre in fisica posso chiedere di calcolare la velocità della Terra nelle due posizioni. Mi sembra un bel salto in avanti e ottenuto anche in maniera molto semplice.
Anche i concetti di tempo e di spazio, come li riporti nel tuo scritto, sono concetti accettabili in maniera acritica fino alla fine dell’Ottocento. In fisica è stato fatto qualche passo in avanti, in particolare dal 1905 in poi. E’ vero che nei problemi della vita quotidiana i vecchi concetti di spazio e di tempo bastano e avanzano, ma è pur vero che ponendo questi concetti in maniera problematica, con esempi adatti per far discutere, si stimolano nei giovani la capacità critica e quella famosa competenza di “imparare ad imparare” che ti è tanto cara. Tutto questo, però, si può fare in fisica e non certo in geografia.
Per concludere, la mia idea è la seguente:
1) la geografia, sia fisica che politica, è importantissima ma deve essere studiata non come materia a parte, ma insieme alla storia; la storia non ha senso senza la geografia e la geografia è monca senza la storia; l’apprendimento delle due discipline non può essere separato, ma deve avvenire all’interno di un’unica materia scolastica;
2) la geografia deve descrivere la Terra, sia nella sua costituzione fisica sia nella suddivisione in nazioni e regioni, secondo gli accordi tra i suoi abitanti umani; quello che fa la Terra nello spazio intorno al Sole come pianeta o quello che fa la Luna intorno alla Terra come satellite è opportuno lasciarlo alla fisica che, come scienza della natura, ha i mezzi anche matematici per analizzarli in maniera più completa e istruttiva, permettendo non solo di descrivere un fenomeno ma anche di prevederne l’evoluzione;
3) il posto della geografia, come materia, dovrebbe essere lasciato al “diritto ed economia” i cui elementi di base dovrebbero far parte del bagaglio culturale di qualsiasi studente, per metterlo in grado di partecipare con consapevolezza alla vita sociale.
Personalmente, al Ginnasio/Liceo classico ero bravissimo in geografia tanto che ancora ricordo a memoria che Punta Gallinas nella parte settentrionale dell’America del Sud si trova a 10° e 11’ di latitudine Nord; all’epoca, però, non sapevo chi fosse il Presidente della Repubblica e non avevo la minima idea della differenza tra un assegno e una cambiale. Almeno in questo la scuola di oggi dovrebbe essere diversa da quella che noi abbiamo frequentato.
